Waterproofing Mistakes to Avoid

broken image

Waterproofing errors can lead to expensive damage that requires extra labor to fix. The damage can reduce the surface's lifespan. The following are common mistakes associated with waterproofing to avoid.

Failure to Maintain Gutters. Gutters play a critical role in proper water management. Failure to regularly remove dirt and debris from gutters causes an accumulation of rainwater that can penetrate walls and ceilings. Therefore, include gutters and downpipes as part of waterproofing system maintenance.

Puncturing the Waterproofing Membrane. Some activities can puncture waterproof membranes. For example, using nails or screws to fix tiles on shower walls or nailing a backerboard can pierce through the membrane and cause damage. If these activities take place, inspect the membrane before it leads to damage.

Neglecting the Building’s Slope. The slope of properties helps direct water away from buildings and homes. However, the base will accumulate it. Roofs that slope downwards mean water will accumulate at the base—failure to understand slopes and determine how water will collect leads to water damage. Therefore, develop plans to get rid of stagnant water or apply extra waterproofing to high-risk areas.
